40 Of My Favorite Pairs Of Shorts For Spring-Summer 2024
INCLUDING: A bunch of options for $100 or less, plus the only "rule" I have for looking (and feeling) good in shorts.
Today’s post is a long list made up of the defining garment of the summer season: shorts. Shorts are a welcomed and necessary part of any warm weather wardrobe, but with low leg coverage comes what can be one of trickiest staples to navigate, or at least navigate well. After all, an inch in either direction on an inseam or the way that they hug (or don’t hug) one’s thighs can completely change their dynamic, even more so than on full length pants. Plus, wearing shorts introduces a level of consideration one must have for their socks that simply doesn’t exist with ankle-covering trousers.
I don’t say this to sow doubt about your fits for the season ahead—simply to set the stage for the 40 pairs below that will get you sorted for every balmy occasion over the next few months. There are options that will allow you to look sophisticated while maintaining max breeziness, and others that will alley oop your full relaxation adventures on the beach. Some just look sick as hell.
As always I tried to curate a balance of inexpensive options and worthy premium stuff, though I did make a concerted effort to avoid too many jaw-droopingly expensive pairs (unless I felt they were truly unique and genuinely warranted inclusion), fully aware that at the end of the day these are items you can basically only wear for a few months out of the year. But as always, enjoy!

The Only “Rule” I Live By When It Comes To Wearing Shorts
The shorts conversation has, for the last several years, been dominated by a debate over inseams. Some are zealots about a 5” inseam as the optimal choice, while more recently, a massive wave of knee-length (and beyond) options have flooded the market. Personally, I think there’s a time and place for all of them, if they meet this one simple criteria:
