Chore coats are rightfully regarded as one of the most practical, versatile, easy-wearing menswear items in existence. They’re usually made of durable stuff like denim, moleskin, or corduroy, have tons of pockets, and you can wear ‘em over and over and over again, whether simply with tee or layered up over sweater or hoodie. And yet, for reasons I’ll explain in a minute, I’ve always had a little trouble finding one I truly love, to the point that I had basically accepted they just weren’t for me. I say all of this because when I recently wandered into Wythe—the Western-inflected NYC-based brand that is deservedly getting all sorts of buzz these days—and saw they had just released a new barn jacket (a cousin of the chore jacket), I thought to myself, oh, those look beautiful on their hangers, but I won’t be leaving here with one.
