Your Way Too Early Fall Style Guide: 10 Items For Welcoming The Colder Days Ahead
Plus, Robert Pattinson's sunglasses and an update on my recent oversized button-up purchase.
Hate is a strong word, so I’ll just say I really don’t enjoy cold weather. For all of its promises of cozy fireside cocoa-sipping, picturesque landscapes, and cheerful holiday gatherings, the day-to-day reality of fall and winter is mostly fending off frozen fingers and avoiding dirty, ice-y puddles on street corners, all while becoming (in my case, more) Vitamin D deficient.
It’s fair to wonder why I’m bringing this up in the last week of July and potentially bringing down the summer vibes in process. It was just a couple weeks ago we were talking about all of the wonderful, heavily discounted summer gear currently available across the internet—a lot of which is still out there and ready to be enjoyed for at least the next couple months.
But fashion retail is, in its mission to inspire insatiable, endless consumption, always at least one season ahead, meaning fall-winter gear has already begun to take over stock rooms and online product selections.
On the one hand these heavier wares hitting the new arrivals section remind me that summer will eventually come to an end. On the other, a fresh selection of sweaters, jackets, and coats means the best kinds of fits—the beautifully-layered, texture-rich kind—must be right around the corner.
Below you’ll find 10 brand new and very lovely fall-winter pieces (and a bunch of more affordable alts) that certainly won’t make me love the cold, but which I would gladly wear once the reality of the season sets in.
I also broke down the Battinson-approved sunglasses I just got and a gave an update on what happened with the oversized button-up shirt I wrote about last week. Enjoy!
This website/newsletter is funded entirely by subscriptions. That means I don’t do affiliate links or brand deals (I’ll let you know if that ever changes), but more importantly that all of these products are things I’ve endorsed and/or included because, well, I genuinely like them. Point is, your subscriptions are both extremely cool and very much appreciated. Thank you!
1. Madewell Wool Houndstooth Topcoat in Italian Fabric
Madewell might not be a brand you’ve thought about recently (they’ve only had menswear for 5 years anyway), but they just dropped their Fall-Winter 2023 lookbook and it’s chock full of goodies I think are worth considering this season. There’s a pinstripe blazer I’m into, but the standout is this wool houndstooth topcoat. In addition to the handsome fabric and ideal knee-length, what really makes it a potential must-have is the vintage-inspired oversized cut. (In my humble opinion there’s nothing worse in the jawnz world than slim-sleeved outerwear.)
