50 Of My Favorite Coats For Fall-Winter 2024

Big overcoats, practical puffers, vintage finds, and more.

I don’t want to put too much pressure on you, but a great coat is probably the single most important clothing item to consider in your winter wardrobe. After all, coats are not just practical barriers between you and the elements, but, given that they cover at least your entire upper half (perhaps your entire body in the case of particularly long overcoats), they’re also the de facto focal point of any cold weather fit. Add in the fact that you probably won’t add more than one or two to your arsenal between now and the great thaw of spring, and it becomes apparent that getting one you don’t just like, but love wearing over and over and over again, is key.

With that in mind, I did my best to narrow down what can be an overwhelming outerwear market to my 50 favorites across my top four categories—overcoats, puffers, shearlings, and duffle coats.

Now, I kept in mind what I said above re: a truly elite-level coat needing to look good day in and day out, so I curated my list with the understanding that each should be able to pair relatively effortlessly with almost anything else you plan on wearing over the next few months.

Point is, while there are a couple of colorful puffers and beautifully textured overcoats in the mix (plus one particularly fire red duffle coat), for the most part I kept my picks to those that are done up in simple, versatile hues and patterns. I also wanted to provide a healthy dose of affordable options, so 37 of the 50 are less than $1,000, and half are under $500. Ultimately, my hope is that the below will make what can feel like a pressure-packed purchase seem like not a big deal at all. Anyway, enjoy!!!
